At Capital Veterinary Hospital, we are proud to offer laparoscopy, also known as keyhole surgery.
A laparoscopy is a modern, minimally invasive surgical technique that allows us to diagnose and treat conditions within the abdomen with less pain, faster healing, and minimal scarring.
What is a Laparoscopy?
Laparoscopy uses a special instrument called a laparoscope—a small tube with a light and camera—that allows our veterinarians to view the inside of your pet’s abdomen on a monitor. Rather than making a large surgical incision, we create small entry points to perform procedures with greater precision and less trauma.
Benefits of Laparoscopic Surgery
- Shorter hospital stay and faster recovery
- Less pain and discomfort after surgery
- Reduced bleeding during and after the procedure
- Smaller scars and lower risk of infection
By choosing laparoscopy, we aim to give your pet a gentler surgical experience and a quicker return to normal life.
When Laparoscopy is Used
We use laparoscopy for a range of diagnostic and surgical procedures, including:
- Laparoscopic Spaying – removing the ovaries through tiny incisions
- Gastrointestinal Procedures – diagnosing and treating digestive issues
- Urological Procedures – investigating urinary tract concerns
- Biopsies – taking tissue samples for further testing
If your pet requires surgery, we’ll always discuss whether a laparoscopic approach is the best option for their needs.
What to Expect During a Laparoscopy
Laparoscopy is performed under general anaesthesia to ensure your pet feels no pain. Small incisions are made to insert the laparoscope and surgical instruments, and gas is gently pumped into the abdomen to create space for safe viewing and operation. Once the procedure is complete, the gas is released, incisions are closed with stitches, and a soft dressing is applied.
In many cases, pets are able to return home the same day with only minimal aftercare required.
How safe is a laparoscopy?
Laparoscopy is considered a very safe and commonly performed procedure, with serious complications being rare. At Capital Veterinary Hospital, we combine expert surgical skill with the latest technology to ensure the safest, most comfortable experience for your pet.
